Prisoners of War in Germany
In German camps, prisoners stayed in delapidated bunkhouses and had limited food rations. Attempted escapes were severely punished. All prisoners were forced to work until they could work no longer.
Transportation
"We were rounded up and packed into cattle cars like sardines. We could not move our arms or legs. We traveled for two days - day and night. The heat was unbearable. Then one morning at dawn, we looked through the cracks in the cattle car. I saw the name Auschwitz or Oswiecim in Polish. I was paralyzed. I got numb. I didn't feel anything." Prisoners were transported in cattle cars for days or weeks on end without supplies. Many of them died on the way to the camps.
